State of Mexico — A catastrophic pile-up involving multiple vehicles took place on Wednesday, November 20, along the Mexico–Querétaro Highway, killing 19 people and severely disrupting traffic flow. The crash happened near kilometer marker 059+000 in Huehuetoca, prompting an immediate response from emergency crews after reports came in of a major highway accident.
Initial findings suggest a large cargo truck failed to brake in time, triggering a chain-reaction crash that involved several other vehicles on the road. The collision’s force caused widespread destruction, with numerous cars crushed and debris scattered across the highway.
After the crash, the trailer ended up blocking all three southbound lanes, prompting a partial shutdown of the highway while emergency teams carried out rescue efforts and began their investigation. Firefighters, paramedics, police, and other emergency personnel spent hours helping the injured, recovering bodies, and clearing the wreckage from the scene.
Officials have verified that the death toll stands at 19, with additional victims suffering injuries of various degrees and being taken to nearby medical facilities. The total number of injured has not yet been officially disclosed.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. While early evidence points to the truck’s failure to stop in time as a possible cause, authorities say they are looking into other contributing elements as well, such as the condition of the vehicles involved, the state of the road, and driver behavior.
